Abstract
Integrated Chinese and Western medicine is a new medicine with Chinese characteristics. During two consulting projects of the Chinese Academy of Engineering,we conducted an interview with Academician TANG Zhaoyou,an oncology surgeon. In the interview,Academician TANG not only talked about his own understanding of the integrated Chinese and Western medicine, but also discussed the huge demand and development opportunities for Chinese medicine in the new era. Academician TANG pointed out that the integration of Chinese and Western medicine is a historical necessity. The lack of talents, the lag of the development of Chinese medicine and the absence of appropriate popular medical science education are the bottlenecks restricting the development of integrated Chinese and Western medicine. Academician TANG also pointed out that it is necessary to actively promote and implement the key measures of "Western medicine physicians learning Chinese medicine" and create a new medicine to integrate Chinese and Western medicine that conforms to the national conditions and Chinese thinking.
