Abstract
|
Osteoporosis is a systemic metabolic disease characterized by decreased bone mass, increased bone fragility, and bone tissue microstructure destruction. The main affected population is middle-aged and elderly people. There is no term for osteoporosis in Chinese medicine, but according to clinical symptoms, it is classified into categories such as "bone atrophy", "bone paralysis", and "Bone dry". In Chinese medicine, the kidney governs the bone and produces marrow. Epimedium is a traditional Chinese medicine for invigorating the kidney. It has the effects of invigorating the kidney and strengthening yang, strengthening the muscles and bones, dispelling wind and removing dampness, etc. Icariin is the main active ingredient. This article summarizes the related pathways of icariin in the treatment of osteoporosis such as Wnt/β-catenin pathway, OPG/RANK/RANKL pathway, MAPK pathway, Notch pathway, Hedgehog pathway, BMP/Smads pathway, PI3K/Akt pathway, PPAR-γ pathway, cAMP/PKA pathway etc, in order to provide idea as for the further development of icariin in the treatment of osteoporosis. |
