Abstract
[Objective] To observe the therapeutic effect of Shanwei Prescription on stomach cancer in precancerous stage and the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) before and after the treatment. [Methods] Sixty cases with chronic atrophic gastritis complicated by gastric mucosa hyperplasia and diagnosed by endoscope and pathologic examination were randomly divided into treatment group and control group. All the patients referable to the qi and yin deficiency type in TCM, 30 cases each group, were given Shanwei Prescription or heriacium tablet respectively for 6 months. [Result] 1) The total effective rate for symptoms improvement was 90.0%after treatment in treatment group, while the control group was 55.67% (P<0.01).2) Improvement of pathologic changes was observed in most patients after the treatment with Chinese herbs. The atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and atypical hyperplasia were improved. There was a significant difference between these two groups (P<0.05). 3) The marked decreasing expression of EGF and EGFR was observed after treatment in Chinese herbs group with significant difference when compared with the control group (P<0.05).[Conclusion] Shanwei Prescription has certain therapeutic effect on stomach cancer in precancerous stages and is able to reverse some pathologic changes of gastric mucosa to a certain degree by appropriately decreasing the expression of EGF and EGFR.
