Abstract

Phlegm in TCM theory, coming from 5 grains, was resulted from the abnormal metabolism of the body. Zhang Jing-yue considered that phlegm, a kind of body fluid, was the metabolism products of water and grain. This kind of phlegm was a kind of fluid derived from cereal essence when body was strong, and the spleen and stomach was in harmony. While, when the body was sick and the phlegm cannot be digested to blood or qi, the internal organs became sick, and the Jin and Ye was defeated even blood can be turned to phlegm. Li shi-zhen ever said that phlegm can live in the liver, when saved up much more it can induce hypochondriac pain. You Zai-xing said that left pain was resulted from accumulation of blood, right pain from phlegm. All of above showed that liver had a special syndrome i.e. the liver with phlegm. From the physiology and pathology, the clinical symptoms of fatty liver and liver with phlegm were much similar, so the fatty liver were consequently named with liver with phlegm. |
