Abstract
    The theory of "liver governing the smooth flow of qi" first found in Internal Canon was an essential concept in Zangxiang theory of traditional Chinese medicine. It highly summarized the physiological functions of liver, including regulating qi activity and improving the cycling of blood and Qi in the whole body etc. This study was aimed to clarify the concept and investigate the physiological functions of liver in traditional Chinese medicine and the related literatures to guide the clinical diagnosis and treatment.
