Effect of Qingfei Huatan capsule on expression of aquaporin-5 in airway epithelium of rats with COPD

Abstract
    [Objective] To study the mechanism of Qingfei Huatan capsule in treating COPD based on the research results in expression of aquaporin-5 of airway epithelium in rats with COPD. [Methods] Thirty-six male rats were randomly divided into model group, blank group, Qingfei Huantan group, ambroxol group, Tanreqing group and erythrocin group. The level of AQP-5 of each group was measured by immunohistochemical method and image analysis method after the COPD was induced and administered with corresponding medicine. The level of the protein quantity of NE of the lung homogenate was determined by ELISA. [Results] Compared with model group, the area percentage and integral optical density of AQP-5 on bronchial epithelial cells, the protein quantity of NE of the lung homogenate of Qingfei Huatan group, mucosolvan group, erythrocin group, Tanreqing group and blank group was significantly increased (P<0.05), but there was no significant statistic difference between Qingfei Huatan group and blank group(P>0.05). [Conclusion] Qingfei Huatan capsule can relieve the clinical symptoms, eliminate sputum and improve the quality of life due to its effect of decreasing the content of NE, adjusting AQP-5 expression and mucin secretion. So it can improve the state of highly mucin secretion.
