Curative observation of acupuncture on idiopathic facial paralysis in acute stage

Abstract
    [Objective] To observe the improved curative effect of acupuncture on idiopathic facial paralysis (IFP) in acute stage. [Methods] 168 patients with IFP were divided into treatment group (84 cases) and control group (84 cases) randomly. Both groups received oral routine treatment for improving local blood supply, relieving or eliminating inflammatory edema of nerve root, nourishing peripheral nerve. Oral prednisone, 30 mg each time, twice a day and methycobal 0.5 mg each time, three times a day were selected, while the patients with virus infection was received acyclovir, 0.2 g each time, 5 times a day. Five days was a course and two courses were taken continuously. Besides from conventional therapy, the treatment group was also received additional acupuncture therapy with modified syndrome differentiation on point of Zan Zhu, Yang Bai, Si Bai, Quan Liao, Jia Che, Di Cang, He Gu etc. Once a day, retaining needles for 30 minutes. Five days were a course and it was lasted for 2 courses. After two therapeutic courses the improved conditions were observed in all the patients of both groups (House-Brackmann Grading System). BR examination was performed to indicate the change of affected side R1, R2, R2' amplitude compared with their own healthy side in percentage. [Results] No significant difference was found in the symptom improvement (House-Brackmann Grading System) between treatment group and control group (PP<0.01). [Conclusion] The acupuncture treatment is effective for the IFP patients.
