Abstract
Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs), a member of type II nuclear receptor superfamily, belong to the nuclear family of ligand activated transcriptional factors. PPARs affect the level of cell metabolism and undertake a variety of physiological and pathological role. The main function of PPARs is to regulate related genes of carbohydrate and fat metabolism. Moreover, PPARs are also known to regulate inlammatory processes through the directly or indirectly down-regulatory effect of transcription of proinflammatory genes or lipid metabolism. PPARs, which provide a key target for drugs, play an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease and some tumor, due to its pleiotropic effects. This paper reviews the relationship between PPARs and development of coronary heart disease, as well as the intervention of traditional Chinese medicine.
