Abstract
[Objective] To study the effect of Compound Rhodiola on apoptosis of hippocampus cells after ischemic brain injury.[Methods] The 80 male SD rats were randomly divided into sham-operation group, model group, nimodiping group (positive control), and Compound Rhodiola high and low dose groups. Permanent models of middle cerebral artery occlusion by suture were made in rats. Drugs were given to the rats 7 d before establishment of the models, ig, once a day, for consecutive 10 d. The behavioral indexes were measured. The proportion of cerebral infarction was detected. Hippocampus tissue was separated, apoptosis rate of neurons was tested by using TUNEL method; the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax were observed by Western blot.[Results] Compared with sham-operation group, the scores of balance test of model group were increased, and grip strength was decreased and the proportion of cerebral infarction was increased (P<0.01). Apoptosis positive cells were evident increased. The expression of Bax was higher, but Bcl-2 was lower. Compared with model group, the scores of balance test of Compound Rhodiola high and low dose groups were decreased, and grip strength was increased and the proportion of cerebral infarction was decreased (P<0.01). Apoptosis positive cells were evident decreased. The expression of Bax was decreased, but Bcl-2 was increased.[Conclusion] The protection of Compound Rhodiola on ischemic brain injury through its inhibition of neuronal apoptosis, and the mechanism may be related with mitochondrial pathway.
