Abstract
Although 12 Jing and 10 Xuan acupoints belong to different meridians and regions of the human body, these acupoints all share specific functions of clearing heat and activating the mind, suggesting that these acupoints may have similar anatomical structures and common acupuncture targets. This study is the first to use the method of Natural Pathological Experiment for Acupuncture (NPEA) to explore the principles of acupuncture. The essential criteria for confirming the correlation between anatomical structures and acupuncture targets are proposed.By analyzing 15 common soft tissue tumors of human hands and feet,it was found that the distribution of glomus tumor correlates most closely with Jing and Xuan acupoints. An analysis of 671 cases of glomus tumors reported in China in the past 10 years showed that 87% of glomus tumors occurred in the hands and feet, and among them,85% located in the subungual and paranail of the fingers and toes. This pattern is highly consistent with the distribution of Jing and Xuan acupoints. These results suggest that glomus body, the normal anatomical structure that glomus tumor originates from, may be the target of acupuncture. The evidence supporting this hypothesis includes the anatomical distribution, physiological functions, pathological changes, and clinical characteristics of the glomus body are all closely related to Jing and Xuan acupoints.Since very little is known about the molecular mechanism of glomus body at present time, further in-depth research will not only help to understand the peripheral regulations of body temperature and blood circulation, but also may discover the specific targets and mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion at Jing and Xuan acupoints, thereby improving the precise effect of clinical treatment.
