| Abstract

| Glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4) is a crucial enzyme of the cellular antioxidant system and can inhibit intracellular lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis. Regulation of GPX4 activity has become therapeutically attractive,particularly in cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and myocardial ischemia-reperfusion. Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) has apparent advantages in treating cardiovascular diseases. TCM-based mechanisms may be related to the regulation of GPX4 and inhibition of cellular oxidative stress,lipid peroxidation,and ferroptosis. In this review,GPX4 is used as an entry point to elucidate the role of GPX4 in cardiovascular diseases and to understand how TCM modulates GPX4 activity to prevent cardiovascular disease development or progression,so as to provide potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and drug development. |
