Abstract
[Objective] To investigate the clinical efficacy of Compound Danshen Drip Pills in improving the ganglion cell layer(GCL) and retinal nerve fibre layer(RNFL) in patients with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy(NPDR). [Methods] A total of 70 NPDR patients who were outpatients or inpatients in the department of endocrinology,The Affiliated Suqian Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University were selected from January 2022 to June 2023,and the baseline clinical data of the patients were collected, and they were randomly divided into 35 cases each in the treatment group and the control group. The treatment group was based on the control group with the addition of the Compound Danshen Drip Pills, which consisted of taking Compound Danshen Drip Pills,20 pills each time, three times a day for a period of 24 weeks after the start of the study;the control group was the conventional treatment group, which consisted of comprehensive management of the controllable risk factors of DR,such as glucose, blood pressure and lipids, according to the guidelines of the specialists in outpatient clinics or inpatient departments. Subjects attended two visits before and after the study, and the thickness of the optic nerve ganglion layer(GCL) in the macula and the thickness of the peripheral nerve fibre layer(RNFL) in the optic nerve head were measured by optical coherence tomography(OCT) before and after treatment. [Results] There was no statistically significant difference between the baseline data of the two groups(P>0.05). After taking Compound Danshen Dropping Pills for 24 weeks, the thickness of the macular GCL and various areas of the RNFL around the optic disc in the treatment group were significantly improved compared with the pre-treatment period(P<0.05);the thickness of the macular GCL and various areas of the RNFL around the optic disc in the treatment group were significantly increased compared with the control group(P<0.05). [Conclusions] Compound Danshen Drip Pill can increase retinal nerve layer thickness and improves early DR nerve cell damage in NPDR patients, retinal neuronal cells may be an important target of Compound Danshen Drip Pill for DR treatment.
