Abstract: |
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the most common neuro-degenerative disease which occurs highly in the aged. The number of PD patients is increasing rapidly worldwide, however, the mechanism of the disease remains unclear. At present, levodopamine, commonly used to PD treatment in clinical practice, has certain side effects. Due to their low toxicity characteristic and neuroprotective potential in PD, herbs of medicine food homology (MFH) are attracting more and more attention. Extensive researches have shown that some herbs of MFH exert anti-Parkinsonian potential by improving mitochondrial function, alleviating oxidative stress and reducing neuronal apoptosis. Therefore, herbs of MFH may be promising anti-Parkinsonian drugs. The review highlights the common experimental models of PD and the neuroprotective potential of some herbs of MFH. |
