Abstract:
Stroke is one of the major causes of disability-adjusted life-year loss in China, and its common residual symptoms include spastic hemiparesis. The efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of spastic hemiplegia after stroke has gained wide attention at home and abroad in recent years. Although the effect of acupuncture in treating this disease is certain, its mechanism still needs to be further clarified. In this paper, we discuse the studies related to the treatment of spastic hemiparesis after stroke to investigate how acupuncture works by reduce neuronal apoptosis, remodel the corticospinal tract, regulate neurotransmitters, decrease excitability of motor elements in the anterior horn of the spinal cord and coordinate active and antagonist muscles, summarize the shortcomings of the current study to provide suggestions for future clinical application and scientific research.
